“Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak," said Texas author Larry McMurtry in “In a Narrow Grave: Essays on Texas.” The author of dozens of novels set in Texas including “Lonesome Dove” and “The Last Picture Show” has made the state and cowboy culture his literary career and, we presume, he's tucked into many a plate of chicken fried steak.
